Hair Notes

Thanks to Aleksandra and Naf, I've got a new hair stylist. Another AXIS stylist named Amy, who is really cute. We traded US Customs stories. Good times. Anyway, nice haircut. I overcompensated from getting 50% off the cut by buying Aveda shampoo & conditioner. Mmm, rosemary mint = good times.

Also good times: shorter drying time with the hair in the morning. That did not, however, get me to work any earlier this morning.

By the way, (feel free to comment)... what is an appropriate tip on a $40 cut?

Seattle, huh

Re-cap of this past weekend:

Friday: realized I left all my map, address, and phone number information at work. Commisserated by watching a Season 3 episode of Coupling on Chicago PBS station.

Saturday:
6:30 crawled out of bed at my mother's behest to drive her to work.
7:00 no use falling asleep, so I read the newspaper.
8:30 decided to start putting my stuff together for my mini trip
9:00ish: ironed my polo shirt, which ended up being wrinkly anyway
9:30 left for work to find maps, addresses, and phone numbers
10:00 left work
10:08 got gas
10:38 arrived at Peace Arch border crossing
11:00 arrived at actual customs officer, who proceeded to ask me questions in an odd order:
"what is your citizenship?"
"what is your business in the US?"
"what friends?"
"how do you know them?"
"who do you work for?"
"okay you're going to have to pull up over there, and give this to the customs officer"
I went inside the customs office where 5 separate officers proceded to ask me the same set of questions in varying degrees of suspicion. Then I had to fill out a form stating what I was and was not doing in the states and where I was going. Then I was asked what kind of car I drove and they took my keys, presumably to search my car. On the way out one of them asked me if I had ever been arrested, and if there was anything on the form I would like to change. "No," I said rather insolently. Then they made me sit down and wait while they presumably searched my car... although because I wasn't able to watch them from inside for all I know they could have stood outside and had a smoke for a while, then decided to give me back my keys and send me on my way. (FYI while I understand their diligence in weeding out TERROR and SMUGGLING, a part of me wonders why I got singled out... was it because I was driving alone, or because my story about "meeting some friends in Seattle, one really is only a friend of mine, the other is a friend of the friend and we're staying at that friend's house..." was a little on the shady side?)

13:00 arrive in downtown Seattle, found parking at Westlake Centre. Checked my trunk to see how much they had rifled through... turns out not so much. Considering in addition to my overnight bag I had my old set of brake pads, my rollerblades, miscellaneous paint products, and old windshield wipers that I failed to mention was there to the Customs officers. Suckas.

13:15 hungry. need food. but first, Victoria's Secret. Spent about an hour in there trying on various articles when I get poked in the shoulder by my friend Kate, who was down in Seattle for a wedding. Small world eh!

14:30 hungry. i walked down to Pike Place Market, got a Tully's Strawberry Spin and a blueberry cake of some kind, and chilled for a bit. Walked down to the Seattle Art Museum where I checked out my secondary objective for the weekend, the Van Gogh-Mondrian Exhibit. Nice to see my favourite painting in real life (it's the cafe terrace one at night, you know which one I am talking about)

16:30 emerged from the Seattle Art Museum feeling very cultured and still slightly shaky from my Customs experience. Still had an hour to kill so I walked back up to the Westlake Centre area and found a Sephora. I bought a lipstick.

17:30 figured it was about time to call Mark & Brian so I did, only to find out they were in Tacoma and were in a pub and hadn't left yet. "Can you kill half an hour?" Hmm. Well I'm only downtown in Seattle's shopping district... let's see what kind of trouble I can get into.

18:30 emerged from my rounds of Nordstrom, Old Navy, Westlake Centre again with a new pair of Kenneth Cole sandals. Phone finally rings.

19:00 Rendez-vous at last! Chill at Brian's, then head out to the local bar area in a neighbourhood called Fremont. They made me eat calamari. Well, not really, they practically dared me to. Boys.

Time gets a bit fuzzy because I didn't have my contacts in anymore, I had to change them to glasses and my eyes didn't get used to the change quickly enough. At any rate, we went to an ice cream place after that, and then another bar that had the most horrible service. Then we went home and crashed and watched the first 20 minutes of Reservoir Dogs.

Sunday:
I woke up early-ish, mostly because I couldn't sleep anymore, and read until everyone else woke up. We met up with another friend of Brian's, then went for breakfast. Drove out to Tacoma again to go diving, except I didn't go diving, I hung out on the beach and sunburned. Oh, and there was this cat... who was really friendly but then bit me and took off shortly thereafter.
Then they went to another dive spot in Federal Way where once again I got to read and get sunburned even more! Fun times.
Got back to Brian's place around 5:00ish, hung out for a while and then went for dinner in Fremont again, a Thai restaurant that was really good. Spicy. Curry. Limey. Okay the limey bit wasn't that great but it was different.
Then I went home. My conversation with the Canadian Customs officer as follows:
"what's your citizenship?"
"where're you headed?"
"where are you coming from?"
"what were you doing in Seattle?"
"how do you know these friends?" >>(to which I replied, "It's a looong story, are you sure you want to hear it?")
"heh. are you bringing anything back with you?" >>("um, underwear?")
"Victoria's Secret?" >>("yes")
"Alright, go ahead."

Nice.

On my way home I saw a shooting star. Incidentally I did make my wish and will update my blog if it comes true. Well I'll update it nonetheless but you know what I mean.

Bourne Again

Last night was Girls Night at L & T's. An evening of M&Ms, gummy bears, scalloped potatoes (don't ask), and cake. And Matt Damon. Mmm. Watched the Bourne Identity in preparation to watch the Bourne Supremacy sometime this week. Anyway, while the girls had their sleepover I went home on account of me having to work today, BC Day. I woke up with a nasty cracking feeling in my elbow which I attribute to dreaming about being in the Bourne Identity movie, or an offshoot of it, Jason Bourne and I were fending off uninvited dinner guests with weapons. I think I smacked my elbow into a wall in a flurry of action... and in real life I must have smacked my elbow on some piece of furniture in my sleep. Ouch.
